The trial conversion of 50049 Defiance at Laira depot in September 1987 for British Rail’s Railfreight business could have seen some Class 50s retained for working freight services. Former Laira fitter Mike Woodhouse details the project and how the chosen Class 50 came very close to emerging in a totally different livery to the Railfreight General colours it subsequently carried.
